Parent Care Warning Flags
An atypical detail of behavior can be a parent care “call to action”. Alert to warning flags, you can intervene and perhaps avert a crisis. Eldercare can be foreign territory and difficult to navigate. A geriatric care manager can help you understand your parent’s needs; find and manage appropriate parent care; and help you achieve a degree of freedom from worry about your parents.
• Your parents refuse to tell you whether or not they have wills, a trust, and powers of attorney for finance or health care directives. In short, they refuse to discuss finances and especially end of life issues.
• When you suggest discussing the possibility of moving to an assisted living community, your parent changes the subject or reacts with anger or denial.
• When you suggest hiring homecare help, your parent resists any outside help or refuses to have a “stranger” in the house.
