GLOSSARY OF TERMS

FINANCIAL

Medicaid programs, mandated by the Federal government and regulated and operated on a state-by-state basis, pay for all or part of the cost of long term care in a skilled nursing facility/nursing home for elders who qualify because of low income and assets, state-operated. Some state programs pay toward the cost of care at home or in an assisted living community. If a recipient owns a home which becomes part of the estate after a recipient’s death, a state may require reimbursement, from the estate, of expenditures made on behalf of a recipient. It can be prudent to seek professional advice in the state where your parent lives.
