Alzheimer’s disease is a neurodegenerative disease that, in its most common form, is found in people over age 65. It is the most common form of dementia accounting for 60% of all cases. The disease is characterized by progressive cognitive deterioration, declining activities of daily living (ADLs) and by behavioral changes and other neuropsychiatric symptoms.
Identifying Alzheimer’s disease at the earliest possible stage gives the patient and family time to plan for the patient’s future needs and care. It also allows the patient to begin taking medicines that are only effective in the earlier stages of the disease. If you suspect Alzheimer’s, it can be prudent to request referral to a specialist in Alzheimer’s diagnosis.
