Marcia's Parent Care Pick
If you’re caring for elderly parents, you know that making decisions about their treatment can be confusing, exhausting, and emotionally devastating. One of the most wonderful elements of geriatric care at this time is the movement known as “slow medicine,” a family-centered form of treatment for the elderly that is less invasive and less expensive than standard care.
Dennis McCullough, MD, coined the term “slow medicine” while caring for his mother during the final stages of her life. A practicing geriatrician (physician specializing in care of the elderly) for 30 years, Dr. McCullough nonetheless realized that he was virtually unprepared for his own mother’s decline. He wrote My Mother, Your Mother: Embracing “Slow Medicine” as a guide for people like himself – children caring for elderly parents.
If you or someone you know is struggling with the care of very elderly parents, Dr. McCullough’s book is an invaluable resource. I would certainly have welcomed his insight and expertise during my parents’ final years.
