Eldercare Resources
There are more services than ever before to help you achieve balance between respect for your parents’ dignity, assurance that their safety and wellbeing needs are met, and a degree of freedom from worry about them. A geriatric care manager can handle the day-to-day work of managing parent care and free you to focus on your own family and career and on your relationship with your parents.
Social workers/discharge planners in the hospital where your parents receive care may be able to refer you to geriatric care managers who practice in the area. An accountant, financial planner, or attorney specializing in estate or elder law where your parents live, may also recommend care managers who practice in the area. The Area Agency on Aging in the county where your parents live may be able to connect you with community-based care management services.
The National Association of Professional Geriatric Care Managers provides a searchable database of members in the U.S. and Canada, as well as suggestions about what to ask when interviewing a prospective care manager. However, many geriatric care managers are not members of this professional organization.
